Dale's compilation of different parent perspectives and experiences on secular parenting was exactly what I needed to read. I know that how I approach this topic isn't flawless, the more information and styles observed, the more likely I am to succeed in my parenting attempt! My kids are entering the phase of life when the "bigger picture" questions are creeping into our conversations. This book is another great tool helping me navigate a rational world view with my kids.

Good information & advice for parents who want to raise children who are strong enough to make ethical choices without religious training.
Important book.
"Parenting Beyond Belief" was so helpful to me as a new mom. I was raised in a fairly religious home, and when I became a mother, I felt really torn; although there were things I had once loved about belonging to a religious community, there was a big problem: I'm not a believer. Reading this was a Godsend (sorry... I couldn't help it), and I would highly recommend it to any parent looking for ways to raise caring, ethical, thoughtful children without dogma.
Dale McGowan is a master at helping parents figure out how to navigate in an environment with often troubling levels of religiosity, especially for those of us trying to raise kids without religion in the South. McGowan is a Southerner himself and understands the particularly fraught circumstances in which some secular parents find themselves when trying to move about the world, attempting to parent with compassion and logic, amongst a highly religious population. This really is like a how-to manual for our family, particularly when it comes to certain subjects that we don't intuitively know the best way to handle--like Santa, or friends asking our kids to go to church with them--situations in which we felt very unsure about what to do. This book has been invaluable to us! We absolutely LOVE the Santa section! It has helped us immensely as our kids are slowly working their way through understanding magical thinking and such. McGowan manages to put a positive spin on tricky situations; things that seemed at times to be parenting problems that were insurmountable to us became clearer and more manageable once we read his take on it. For instance, he writes about praising children for thinking their way through things instead of just telling them the answer and then moving on. He encourages parents, with most questions children ask, to ask the child what they think first before straight out answering their question, and then move from that point forward, building on what they already understand and encouraging them to think through their question using the fabulously open & curious mind they already have. When you praise them for figuring something out, it turns out, they want to try to continue to do that in the future, leading to more logical thinking and often to making better choices on their part (and ours!). The book's focus on history and science and psychology and the types of truths we want to use as a foundation for teaching our kids how the world works, particularly with the topic of religion, makes this book a great resource for secular parents. Plus the book is also very funny and just a total joy to read! Highly recommend!
This book was given to me. I've never come across so many writers with bad narrative skills, and with a lot of hot air. I hope this isn't what American English is evolving into.As an atheist, I do not recommend this book.
