Review

“With the keen eye and deft pen that he's long brought to telling the odd and wonderful and fascinating story of America, Tony Horwitz has returned to familiar territory—the South—to give us a unique piece of reportage from a region that tells us a whole lot more about the country than the country sometimes wants to admit. Like his classic Confederates in the Attic, this book will be read, remembered, and treasured.” —Jon Meacham, Pulitzer-Prize-winning historian and author of The Soul of America “Tony Horwitz’s reporting is fearless and persistent and inspired—and it produces views of America like no one else’s. Spying on the South kept me turning the pages to see what frightening and funny revelation was coming next. An important book for our almost unprecedented moment in history.” —Ian Frazier, author of Great Plains and Travels in Siberia“In the long dark years before the Civil War, Frederick Law Olmsted toured the South by stage, by boat, by train, and by foot, reporting on a nation unraveling. Tony Horwitz does much more than follow in Olmsted’s footsteps in this searching travel narrative: he chronicles an American agony, the pain of division, the anguish of uncertainty. But he finds, too, an enduring American spirit of generosity, and commonweal, and curiosity.” —Jill Lepore, author of These Truths: A History of the United States “Two journeys, a hundred and sixty years apart, remind us that history doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme. In the midst of our country’s long-overdue reckoning with symbols of white supremacy, Tony Horwitz retraces the steps of America’s greatest landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted, whose encounters with slavery forced him to rethink the role of civic spaces in the American experiment. Horwitz brings home a magnificent account of who we have been and what we might still become.” —Henry Louis Gates, Jr., author of Stony the Road “Having grown up amidst the Emerald Necklace, having lived off the northern fringes of Central Park and later the western edge of its rangier cousin, Prospect, and having read Devil In the White City, I truly did not know there were any more astonishments left in the life of Frederick Law Olmsted. Leave it to the incomparable Tony Horwitz to reveal Olmsted’s secret life as a journalistic super-spy, peering not merely into the burgeoning Confederacy, but, as Horowitz poignantly observes, a cultural divide with which we are still reckoning.” —John Hodgman, author of Vacationland“In the 1850s, Yankees saw the South as a foreign country and the New York Times sent Frederick Law Olmsted on an undercover mission to interpret it for readers. It was a daring and inspired move, and so is Tony Horwitz’s retracing of Olmsted’s path from the Potomac to the Rio Grande. Spoiler alert, things don’t always go well for our dauntless guide, but they sure do for the reader. This is one of the smartest, funniest, and most illuminating books about the South and Texas, and about our own divided times, I’ve had the pleasure to read.” —Bryan Burrough, author of Days of Rage, The Big Rich and Public Enemies

This book is jointly written by Howard J. Van Till (author of The Fourth Day: What the Bible and the Heavens are Telling Us about the Creation), Davis A. Young (author of books such as The Bible, Rocks and Time: Geological Evidence for the Age of the Earth,Creation and the flood: An alternative to flood geology and theistic evolution, etc.) and Clarence Menninga. They write in the Introduction to this 1988 book, "The goal of this book is modest. We seek to challenge some of the misperceptions concerning the nature of the professional scientific enterprise, and to illustrate the mischief that flows from these misperceptions by presenting case studies drawn principally from the arena of the creation-evolution debate."Here are some additional quotations from the book:"...the shrinking sun report... continues to be employed as a 'scientific evidence' for a young earth... (Thomas) Barnes gave no evidence of having taken into account the several professional publications which had cast serious doubt on the reality of secular solar shrinkage." (Pg. 56-57)"This claim (based on moon dust) has continued to be published by young-earth advocates until the present time..,. One hardly knows where to begin in evaluating such a report. The statements about the amount of dust predicted and the amount found reflect both gross misinformation and ignorance of research results published before 1982." (Pg. 75, 77)"If scientific creationists wish to have their theories taken seriously, they must discontinue their current practice of ignoring the professional geological literature the discusses the observation of these critically important details." (Pg. 117-118)

The authors are Christians, two are geologists, well-qualified to write on problems which have surfaced in the creation science literature from a logical or scientific standpoint. They also deal with some problems inherent in the common practice of teaching evolutionary theory as though it can be used to prove metaphysical statements about the origins of the universe or of life on earth. The authors point out that creation scientists frequently have failed to check their research or to clearly define the terms they are using. Some materials do not take into account more recently published articles which have a bearing on the point at issue, sometimes even disproving it. Other materials betray a lack of understanding of common scientific terms and concepts. The result is that creation science materials can end up bringing discredit upon their authors and publishers. If they are published to encourage the faith of non-scientific readers who believe in the inerrancy of Scripture and would like to see scientific support for some passages, these inaccuracies can do harm to the very audience for which they were intended. For the evolutionists, as the authors describe scientists who are philosophically committed to evolution as a world-view rather than simply using it as a framework for scientific study, other problems arise. One often seen in popular scientific presentations or non-technical literature is that scientific evolutionary theory is used to prove philosophical conclusions which are actually outside the competence of scientific research. As an example, they point to Carl Sagan's beautifully-produced television series "Cosmos", each episode of which began with a statement that the material universe is all there ever was, is, or will be. From a scientific point of view, the authors point out that this leaves one asking, Was Carl Sagan present at the beginning of the universe? If not, how does he know these things? Where is the scientific proof? The book's conclusion is that philosophical creation science and philosophical evolutionism, when purporting to prove metaphysical theories of origins which are outside the domain of hard science, both fall into the category of "folk science", and are simply engaged in a shouting match which does no credit to either position. This book was written several years ago, so some of the examples given are slightly dated, but the arguments being made are still perfectly valid, and should cause any reader to be more critical when reading or viewing materials coming from both of these folk science positions.

This is a book that I previously had, lost and wanted in my library as a reference book. He shows that Scripture does not demand a young earth.

Published in 1988, there’s no doubt that this intriguing book should be out of date by now. Yet it reads with the immediacy of modern debate, and details very clearly the difference between the realms of faith and science. Creation science and evolunionism (perhaps scientism today) are both tested against the requirements of scientific relevance and rigor, and both found wanting. Clear examples of scientific and unscientific arguments are compared and contrasted. And the (possible) fact that those arguments are out of date is quickly irrelevant in the excitement of seeing how discoveries are bent, misapplied or misunderstood to lend apparent strength to preconceived arguments. Most scary to me were examples from creation science textbooks that might have been (might be?) used in school. And most powerful was the reminder that scientific “laws” are not instructions that must be followed, but rather descriptions of how things seem to work. I really enjoyed this book and would love to find an updated version of it.Disclosure: I found it in a sale at church.

As both a scientist and a Christian, I found this treatment of the much-heated debate on creation vs. evolution very fair-minded and enlightening. It is written for the layperson in mind and is very clear in defining the scope for both the realms of science and religion. As a person who has grown weary of the "mud slinging" from both sides of the controversy, I am glad to recommend this book to anyone who is honest with himself and open-minded (believers and non-believers alike!). One criticism, however, is their rather lengthy examples using geology. Since I am trained in molecular biology, this section did not hold my interests as greatly as the other sections. This book helped give me new insights to strengthen both my scientific stand on objective facts and my religious stand on a personal, loving God who created this wondrously complex universe.
