Robert Jordan was (and probably still is) a friend and a confident of George W. Bush. He is a lawyer and represented him in court proceedings before he become President. Jordan was under consideration for various top positions in the Bush administration. Finally, the White House called with an offer for a “path less taken,†and certainly not anticipated: Would Jordan be willing to become the American Ambassador to Saudi Arabia? Hum. He had no prior formal diplomatic experience. He agreed to that proverbial “one-year†commitment. His nomination paperwork was to be submitted to the Senate on September 11, 2001. “Obviously, the events of that day prevented submission,†as Jordan states. Nonetheless, it was imperative that the paperwork be submitted the next day, when no planes were flying in American skies. He was quickly approved.Jordan was not an “Arabist,†nor could he speak Arabic. That is just fine with the Saudis. Their chief, probably sole criteria for an American ambassador is that he has the ability to pick up the phone, and the President of the United States would take his call. Jordan clearly had that qualification. Jordan has an incisive mind and proved to be a quick study. If he had preconceived ideas about the Kingdom, they were set aside. He listened, which was a key piece of advice he received and took: “…a good ambassador has four ears and only half of a tongue.†He did not sugar-coat the reality before him: “The concrete and glass embassy structure mirrored the Stalinesque exterior of Quincy House [his residence] but was much less inviting inside.†Not only did he cultivate and maintain reasonable relationships with the senior Saudi political leadership, he also would frequently attend dinners by the Saudi business leadership, such as Usama Kurdi. Jordan admits gaining 20 pounds during his two years in the Kingdom; easy enough to do when some nights meant two social dinners, and a simple walk around the compound is frowned upon, if not forbidden, by those “handlers†who wear the dark sunglasses.One of his most difficult assignment was to get the Saudis to support America’s invasion of Iraq in 2003. Sure, they were no friend of Saddam, who had once rained Scud missiles on Riyadh. Their principal concerns were the aftermath; prescient indeed. With nods and winks, they conveyed their approval and support. He was also in Riyadh for the terrorist attacks of May 12, 2003, when three upscale housing compounds were attacked, killing approximately 50. He insisted on visiting all three in the immediate aftermath, no doubt overruling his “handlers.†And his staff went to see the wounded in the hospitals.An even more difficult assignment was working for his own government. Of the revelations, one of the most stunning: “It’s my understanding that the Saudis threatened to walk out at Crawford because the president didn’t have a prepared response to those demands. How could he? He didn’t even know they had been presented. Staff had let him down – either negligently or, worse, INTENTIONALLYâ€. (Emphasis added). And Jordan knew who that staff was, and named them, that had deliberately intercepted key communication from Crown Prince Abdullah and did not give it to the President of the United States. Leaders that are held “hostage†by their staffs. In another case, the Saudis were accused of withholding information concerning the 9-11 hijackers. Turns out they had given it all to the FBI, who, in turn, refused to share it with anyone else. Another assessment by Jordan: “This may sound sad or funny or both, but the truth is that during my ambassadorship I was never exactly sure what the U.S policy was towards Saudi Arabia.†And why did he leave after two years? An oblique reference to having to defend the indefensible: he got tired of going to Saudi dinner parties where they played “pin the tail on the Ambassador.†Droll enough.“Eclectic.†Well, I’ve been called worse. In fact, it may be a preferred term… and it was the operative term Jordan used for a “…group of friends, some of whom performed in the satirical television show ‘Tash ma Tash’.†The first time I saw him was when he was “doing the right thing†by throwing out the first pitch to open the Little League Season where my son played. Nice short speech, but those four guys in their body armor, ever so close, were that jarring reminder, to use the overworked metaphor: “that we weren’t in Kansas, anymore.†And he did come to the hospital where I worked, in a Sisyphean effort to reduce the tensions caused by the Iraq invasion.Jean-Christophe Rufin was once the French Ambassador to Senegal. I’ve read his excellent Immortelle Randonnee: Compostelle Malgre Moi (French Edition) concerning his hike to Compostelle. Often, he’d be putting up his own tent in the evening. He was clearly on his own, and preferred it that way, as he reflected back on the “cocoon†that was his life in Senegal, with the many servants. In Jordan’ summation of the pros and cons of his experience, one senses much the same thing: it is so nice to walk down the street, anonymously, without the “handlers†there for your protection. A solid 5-stars for Jordan’s insightful account as to what it was really like, and add a big plus if you shared the same time in Riyadh with him.
Desert Diplomat is an engaging inside look at life as an ambassador and a behind the scenes, no holds barred, look at the conflicts within governments that challenge those who are trying to build relationships. Ambassador Jordan gives us an insightful education in US post 9/11 relations with Saudi Arabia and the dynamics of that area of the world as he shares his personal experiences. His account of his experiences is honest and easy to understand as he takes the readers through the complicated politics of the Middle East.
The two year journey of a non-politician who was appointed ambassador to Saudi Arabia at the time of the 9/11 crisis. A fascinating insight into the Bush administration confirming some of our worst fears, without the political posturing; and it gives us insight into where we are now and helps us pose question regarding where we are going. He does this without being over critical of either Bush or Obama and gives us insight into the complexity of the issues internationally and internally that one has to deal with. Pleasantly surprised with reading it; it was our history book club choice and well worth it.
Ambassador Jordan did an excellent job of capturing the aftermath of 9/11 in the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia. I appreciated the fact that he didn't seem to hold back on his personal or professional opinions of US and foreign leadership. His unique perspective made this book a very enjoyable read.
Fascinating read on the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia from a front row seat during 911. Ambassador Jordan does a great job explaining the complex relationship between our countries. Must read for those interested in 911 and Saudi Arabian politics.
This book is a well written window into the workings of GW Bush and our Saudi allies.
