James Fletcher-Watson, now sadly deceased, is a master of combining a measure of representation (you would recognize what he's painting) with an impressionistic, painterly style. Unless you're a very gifted artist, you won't get his step by step the first time and maybe not the first 100 times you try. But, you will progress with each try. It takes a few times following his instructions before his style sinks in. He is, of course, an excellent draftsman, and anyone trying to learn his style should work on drawing as a parallel activity. Notice how perspective can be very important even in landscapes.All in all, the book is a great value. You will enjoy the lessons, and you will enjoy his art. The book could be an excellent coffee table addition, and it stands on its own as such.Happy painting!
If you're a watercolor painter and favor the style of Ed Wesson, Seago, Ranson, others like them, then you will enjoy this book. The author, now deceased, had a long painting career. He provides detail on his methods en plein air; no surprises here. I most enjoy the multitude of color plates as examples of his style.
