Pentti Linkola is a genius, IMHO. He is a Deep Ecologist from Finland with great insight into the human condition today. I could not recommend this book more highly. I only wish much more of Linkola's work would be translated into English. If you are serious about climate change, the environment, and the immediate future of this planet, this is a must read book.

This book came from an obscure reference. The edition I received had some pages that were either typeset incorrectly (lighter on the page) than previous pages. Wasn't sure why this was the case. I didn't return the book. Have not finished it yet. This man strikes me as an original thinker, almost as if he's on a different island surveying the damage caused by humans. Very interesting and insightful take on the present state of mankind today. Would I agree with everything he proposes? Probably not. Does he believe what he says. Probably.

This book challenges you. It doesn't make any effort at all to be diplomatic about the causes of our ecological problems and some possible solutions. Over all it's inspiring to see someone speak with such boldness and honesty. It's also inspired me to take up gardening.

Linkola is a genius! A must read book... a unique and critically important book. I wish more of Linkola's work was translated into English.

I stumbled across this book surfing Amazon for books on the environment and was intrigued by the background and provocative quotes given in the book write-up and reviews. Further research on the internet revealed additional details of the author, who, amongst his attributes seems to have a deep love of nature and distain for what man and his rampant materialism is doing to it. He is well known in Finland for his controversial views, has been writing books and articles since 1955, and as a proponent of deep ecology has been labeled an eco-fascist. This is latest book and the first to be translated into English. Not surprisingly, this all sounded quite interesting so I took the plunge and bought the book. Whilst the book and author didn't quite live up to my elevated expectations, it was in many respects an interesting and thought provoking read.So, what do you get with Can Life Prevail? The book is just over 200 pages long, and is divided into five chapters. It has 37 short articles, most of them dating back to the 1990s. They are grouped under the following chapter headings:Chapter 1: Finland (six articles)Chapter 2: Forests (six articles)Chapter 3: Animals (eleven articles)Chapter 4: The World and Us (eleven articles)Chapter 5: The Prerequisites for Life (three articles)These chapter titles are somewhat bland indicators of the fascinating articles they feature. Most of the articles are relatively short and concise. This has the benefit of that you get clear, to the point article content and that the range of topic matter per chapter is wide. However, it should be noted that Linkola is very much a man of Finland, and his frame of reference and experience is derived from that country. In some cases the article content is very Finland specific; in others, although his Finland experience dictates his viewpoint, the topic matter can easily be related to what is happening elsewhere in Europe and the world.Chapter 1 is a good illustration of how even Finish focused themes have a wider relevance. Though titled Finland, chapter 1 actually covers topics of universal relevance within a Finish spark point;o article 1 looks at the modern obsession with food hygiene which Linkola believes actually undermines the peoples ability to resist germs;o article 2 discusses the decline in physical exercise which in his view is changing the concept of what it is to be a human being;o article 3 explores the modern fixation on money and the role of media in filling peoples conscious with what he regards as `rubbish that is both trivial and false';o article 4 asks the question of whether the minority in society are leading the majority in a direction they don't want to go;o article 5 ruminates on the topic of life protection, utopia's and agriculture prompting Linkola's statement that the worst mistake that anyone can make in thinking about improving society is `to envision the prevailing system a starting point';o and article 6 looks at why building a new motorway should be viewed as a criminal activity given the state of the planet and natural world.Therefore, just from this one chapter of Can Life Prevail? you can see the scope of what is discussed is quite diverse and of universal interest; and this where the chapter focus is Finland.The real strength of the book is Linkola's uncompromising views and the colourful turn of phrase. There is no doubt that his values and way of life belong to an older age, but this, combined with his environmental concerns, provide an valuable perspective from which he views the destructive and negative aspects of today's society and culture. Throughout the book there are some quite incisive observations that really do get you thinking. He is not afraid to speak unpleasant truths, as some of the examples that follow will show.In Can Life Prevail? Linkola see's the western way of life, the democratic system and the population explosion as being huge factors in our destruction of the environment. He believes parliamentary democracy is "a suicidal form of government". He understands that "Our society and ways of life are based on what man desires rather than what is best for him.". He believes that `The underlying values of a society ought to be questioned, when such a society is headed to its doom.', and that `The most serious environmental disasters occur in democracies. Any kind of dictatorship is superior to democracy, for a system where the individual is always bound one way or another leads to utter destruction more slowly. When individual freedom reigns, humanity is both the killer and the victim'. He says `all kinds of collective suicide are perceptible in our society'.He strongly believes that population growth must be curbed if the planet and natural world as we know it has any chance for survival. He suggest that the human population must fall to about 10% of its current levels if there is to be any hope for us and the natural world (although a 50% cut would be good start), and advocates that extreme measures are taken before it's too late. He argues that procreation can no longer be a family decision; it must be regulated by society, and that `It would be a spark of hope if only wars were to morph in such a way as to target the actual breeding potential of a population: young females and children, half of whom are girls. Unless this happens, wars will mostly remain a waste of time or even a harmful activity'.He has withering views of the population at large. `Faith in humanity is the greatest of all follies. If man knew what was good for him would history be chock-full of wretchedness, war, murder, oppression, torment and misery? Would mankind have driven itself to the brink of total destruction by following millions of false beacons?'. The only solution to move from our `suicide society' to `one of strict central government and the tireless control of citizens'. Such a Government could implement a programme for the preservation of life. The eco programme he envisages, as outlined in the last article of the book, is a simplistic, absurd and utterly terrifying vision. It makes the life depicted in George Orwell's novel `1984' look like a holiday camp.As the examples given show Linkola can be extremely controversial and provocative in his comments. However, if you think the whole book is full of explosive comments you would be mistaken. Linkola does speak his mind freely but when it comes to the environment, nature and its birds and animals, animal rights and factory farming, and a host of other topics covered in this book, he speaks just plain common sense. He is direct and forthright but his arguments are well grounded.So, would I recommend you get this book Can Life Prevail? Yes and no. It is far from perfect. However, the forthright observations, engaging writing style and total candor make the book a compelling reading, even if some of what he says is highly objectionable. Open the book at any page and there will be a comment or point of view there that draws you in. So, if you want a book that will challenge your existing mindset, provoke a reaction, and make you think, then this book might just fit the bill. I've certainly not come across anything quite like it before.

A realistic environmental solution

I have been interested in Pentti Linkola for the past few years. His writings are interesting...they are thought provoking, and they are brutally honest. Is he always right? No. Is he usually? Yes.This 'book' is really a collection of Linkola's essays over the years. The translation appears to be quite good, with what minimal Finnish I know.Linkola approaches things from a combination of the Schumacher 'Small is Beautiful' approach with a Fascist approach. In other words, like Schumacher, Linkola favors the local, the rural, the ecological. From the Fascist standpoint, Linkola is in favor of forced sterilization, population control, and the like.Let the reader beware...if you are a left leaning environmentalist, there is much here that will 'offend the senses'. However, those are the people who should read this book. Environmentalism does not make sense when approached from most angles. Linkola's version makes perfect sense. Scary, but logical.

Excellent translation of these refreshing ideas, my only complaint is the terrible cover art.

Terrific book!! Gives a point of view not really found often in literature: Women actually serving in war zones. Shows the original motivations, pre-9/11, of three very different women for signing up for the Indiana National guard. All served deployments in the middle East, and had a variety of experiences. Their stories are inspiring, heart-breaking, fascinating and horrifying, and brought home clearly to me that war is hell. These women are from different backgrounds and either enlisted originally for the extra money every month or the college tuition benefits or both. At the point of their enlistment, the U S National Guard troops had not been used in extended conflicts on a long term basis. 9/11 and the ensuing conflicts in the Middle East changed that. Helen Thorpe is a masterful author. I highly recommend this book.

Chilling look into the consequences of war in general and of women warriors in particular. While it is easy for the politicians to stand in front of the cameras and talk about how inspired they are by our troops and their sacrifice, it's entirely another to take respnsibility for the incalculable disruption and damage done to their lives and their families. As a society, we will be paying for these ill considered and poorly managed military actions for decades to come. This book is a disturbing peek under the hood of what happened on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq through the eyes of three women who did what most of cannot even imagine and would never attempt.

No matter how much I read or watch about this subject, I never feel that I understand more than the tiniest sliver about it. By profiling these women, Thorpe personalizes the experiences of serving in these wars in a compelling way. These three women are far from perfect but each tremendously likeable in her own way. The end is the most interesting part of the book—how each of them adjusted to life back in the States. Each of them had similar difficulties making the transition.When the combat ban on women was lifted, one of the women profiled, Desma, says that women have already been in combat, but maybe now they would be trained like the men, something that had been denied her.One of the women says, that she “realized they would all be counting, possibly for the rest of their lives, what the last decade had cost. What it had cost the people who had gone away (to Afghanistan and/or Iraq) and the people they left behind.”Thorpe briefly mentions the epic rates of alcoholism and depression and suicide of the returning soldiers. She never hits you over the head with anything but illustrates the damage done, as well as the positive things the women took from serving.

Helen Thorpe's second book. She continues her compelling personal journalism dive into the lives of American women caught in the endless war/economic inequality/cultural conflict that defines so many lives in America. This one about the women drawn into military service as an escape from poverty, only to be sucked down into a life- and family-destroying maelstrom of repeated deployment, lying recruiters and officers, and gender discrimination and harassment in the US military. And how their courage, determination and soulful friendships kept their heads above water -- somewhat.

This was an extremely moving book. Ms. Thorpe tells the story of three women in the Indiana National Guard who served in Afghanistan (and two of them also served in Iraq). They have to deal with the problems all of our soldiers have had with being pulled out of their normal lives at home and sent to fight in these two wars. In addition, they have to deal with the problems of dealing with being women in a traditionally male situation. Yes, they volunteered for their jobs. However, they didn't volunteer for the discrimination they faced. In addition to the problems all of our soldiers face, two of the women are mothers, which entails additional burdens, as they try to balance their life as a soldier with their lives as mothers and grandmothers. This book was very well written, and their stories fascinating.BTW, do not believe the negative review posted about the "lack of AK-47's in the US Military". Obviously, the reviewer has not read this book. The book clearly explains that the job of two of the women in the book was to clean and repair captured AK-47's that were then given to the local Afghanistan forces to use, due to their dependability.

this was a book club selection. it was not one i was looking forward to reading. i would highly recommend to any book club that enjoys philosophical, political, socio-economic, feminist, economic issues that have no black/white answers. this book has altered my thinking to some degree concerning my biases against the military and my snobbishness about peoples' life decisions. i am a west coast somewhat liberal thinker, and i really did need a new lens through which to view middle american situations and life styles.in terms of writing style, i am not a great literary judge. there were times when i thought there could have been a bit more editing, but by the time i finished the book, i felt that the details probably contributed to a more precise as well as holistic understanding of events and characters.

Here is an author who is not only the consummate expert we expect when we buy such a book, but is likewise both an excellent writer and teacher. Technical material is presented in perfectly sized and easy to digest chunks, you will find no academic puffery here. Code examples are painstakingly minimal, so as to be easily and immediately grasped and to complement the text, rather than interrupt it. Would that more technical texts were presented this well, a real gem here.

Notice that the title contains "for Windows, Linux, and Oracle(r) Solaris" not "for Microsoft(r) Windows, Linux, and Oracle(r) Solaris". The author works for Oracle (via Sun). This results in an odd and at times distracting bias in the text. For example, in Chapter 1, the UltraSPARC T2 (aka niagara2) is used as the example modern processor instead of say the Intel CoreI7 (aka nehalem, westmere). Then there are many references to the Sun Studio compiler and specific compiler options. Yes, gcc and icc are covered although often after Sun Studio. The coverage of Oracle/Sun in this book does not match current market share, and sadly probably does not match future market share.Bias aside, this is a very good book on practical multicore programming. Read the other two (as of this writing) reviews. They lay it on a bit thick, but I basically agree. My one gripe is that the author is overly fond of automatic parallelization and Sun Studio's autopar. Having used a Sun Fire server for years, I have tried and been underwhelmed by autopar. Anyone reading this book would not satisfied with autopar. Also, mixing automatic parallelization in the same chapter with OpenMP does OpenMP a disservice.

Browsing through this book at the local bookstore, I found it to be a suitable road map for learning how to program multicore systems. There are several topics and technologies in this subject, and the book covers them broadly. I say this because the reader has to pursue each topic in depth through other resources. These are highlighted in the references section. (For example, to learn POSIX threads programming, I've followed through by studying Robbins and Robbins' "UNIX System Programming" and Kerrisk's "The Linux Programming Interface". As both these in turn point to Butenhof's book, I'll probably follow the trail there too ...) Thorough details on such things as NPTL, to the niggler's delight, are found beyond Gove's book."Multicore Application Programming" is useful for the aspiring system programmer.

After my oldest fell in love with the Dora reader and collection of books, I got this set for my littlest one. The books are perfect, but Chris from Sesame Street is the ONLY voice for EVERY book!!! No Elmo, no Big Bird, no Cookie Monster; just “some dude”!!! He doesn’t even sing the songs at the back of the books: he SPEAKS them!!! Doesn’t hold my child’s attention (or mine). Will be returning.

Wonderful gift for the toddler in my life. Doesn’t occupy a ton of space which is great. Volume level is loud enough to hear perfectly but not annoyingly loud like some kid toys.

My sons 1 he plays with the books and the buttons hopefully in a year or 2 he will understand it a little more

I love the book as that the reader came with but was disappointed to find out that the books aren’t read by the sesame street monsters but instead by Chris. My son loves playing and reading the books but doesn’t even bother with the reader.

Amazing story of an intelligence officer who worked with had worked in the Middle East trying to bring together two groups of people who have been fighting since the 1930's. Part of the reason why I like this book is that it is a wonderful thriller that shows the ins and outs of the intelligence community and the hard work that they do, especially when pressured by outside forces (President, Congress, etc...) But I also like that this biography didn't just give a timeline of what happened in Mr. Ames life in a linear format. This combined the history of the region and the conflict with how Mr. Ames fit into the process that was going on during the time. Of course, there needed to be some biographical information involved, but this wasn't just about him and ended when he died. The story flowed too that made the reading enjoyable and not hard to read. Good book, great story.

At this moment in time it's good to go back to the early days of the Middle East crisis. It also makes it more complicated when you get to see the so called human side of what makes for a good spy. There is no objective truth. The people who spend their lives wallowing in this dark arena have no perfect handle on any more than slivers of several barely partial truths, and Bird brings them all to life and death. He makes the most of the little we can know. It's a book to read slowly, unlike the novels that cover the same territory. The bottom line is, Trust no one, but hope that good journalism like this can keep our heads slightly above water. This is not a stylish book, but it is really well written and never clunky or hackneyed.

This is a well researched book and presents detailed information about an influential and successful modern American spy. This book is not for the casual reader. The cast of characters is many and their movements around the Middle East complicated. Robert Ames, the good spy, died in one of the first major terrorists attacks against the US. I am of the believe that we did not learn enough from this terrible incident as several other attacks occurred prior to the big one on 9-11. Of course, it is extremely difficult to provide 100% security for surprise suicide killers, yet our giant government seemed slow to react or to recognize the capacity for horrific mass murder. One wonders, after these attacks and the intelligence about terrorism, why were American airlines flying around with the doors to the cockpit unlocked in the year 2001 when the airlines Israel had long stopped this practice? While Ames is a skilled CIA agent, he seemed to me to belong more in the Department of State as a diplomat. Again, this book is not for the casual reader but for those who like heavy duty history and are serious about understanding the Middle East.

I definitely enjoyed this book. I found it intriguing. I wish more "secret" info could have been given; I mean at times we know Ames is having meetings and other clandestine operations but few details are given other than the fact the meeting occurred.Sadly it is affirmed through this book that the media reports what an administration wants the public to know, while in actuality something opposite the report is occurring. In some sense I understand it, but in another sense, you wish we could get truth! Thankfully there are books like the Bible that give us truth.

Not the Ames that betrayed his country. This is an important work in the sense that it brings the importance of human intelligence (humint) into focus, especially in an area where infiltrating groups that are hostile to America is incredibly difficult because they are so often made up of family members and long time friends. Ames was murdered in the suicide bombing of the American Embassy in Beirut in April of 1983. The United States and Israel both blame Hezbollah. Hezbollah denies any responsibility while taking credit fro the destruction of the Marine Barracks in Beirut a mere six months later. While researching my master's thesis I found it impossible to prove or disprove and came to the conclusion that it was most likely Syrian backed PFLP (People's Front for the Liberation of Palestine), however that is really nothing more than an educated guess.

The story of Robert Ames life as chronicled in this book left me with some unfortunate conclusions. Firstly, the relationship between Israel and their neighbors and the Arab world as a whole has only become worse. Suicide bombers are not a new phenomenon with the rise of ISIS but have been part of history in the Middle East for some time. Spies on the ground have a better feel for our allies and adversaries than their bosses in Washington who may have objectives that are not based on reality. The bombing of the American embassy in Beirut and the siege of the Libyan embassy have dangerous similarities. They both should have been better fortified and protected. There is a strange naïveté we have about this. Lastly, the U.S. needs more "spies", liaisons or agents on the ground connecting, befriending or trying to understand local politics and their bosses in Washington should not second guess their conclusions or expect them to conform to all the rule books at home when needs on the ground are different.An eye opening book. It gave me some understanding of the radicalization of the Middle East.

I lived the period in beirut and my parents personally knew "The red Prince". All I can say that the details in the book are very accurate.Very sad what happened to the American Embassy in 1983 where too many good american people died while trying to do good for the Middle East.The Red Prince was a very good guy, as my parents said to me, and he protected them from harm on different occasions. He got blown up at a place where used to be a 2 times daily passage for me. I could have been on that road in that specific hour.Highly recommended. Enjoy
