I purchased this book to verify my child is at the third grade standards. It is based on common core which I do not like or believe it, but still many of the questions are relevant and good for practice and placement. I did find errors in the book which was a bit disheartening in my opinion. I purchased the book used so there was some writing I had to white out or erase prior to being able to use the book. The book tests on reading,l language and math. The book also shows where you can go online to get more resources and practice for these common core standards if you need them. Although my child is not required to take any type of testing being homeschooled I wanted to ensure they were working on the same subjects and skills as other kids their age if not better. This is an ok resource to check where your child stands but I was not overly excited by it. I think it could be much better.

I usually love the Spectrum products, but this one is not as advertised. I specifically bought it because the description says it comes with a bubble sheet to practice testing. It does not. This was the whole reason I bought the book. To give my son some confidence before he took the standardized test.

Good for prepping your kids! Use this as an aide to school work or to improve your child's performance. Fun to do and easy to grade! Although there are many options out there, I choose this one because I've used this brand before and was happy. I overall recommend this book for teaching or prepping you kids.

I'm usually not a big fan of non-fiction books, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one! The author has a very personable way of writing that made me feel like I was having a nice, informal dinner with him and his wife. I also appreciated the fact that this wasn't a tell-all type of book that tried to show the reader the ugly side of the occupants of the White House. Instead, it struck me as being extremely truthful and down to earth. It was written with great warmth and respect. As a result Mr. West has shown the first ladies and their families as human beings, and made them very accessible to those of us who will never find ourselves serving in any comparable position. I'm old enough to remember the Eisenhower presidency, and to have lived through the Cuban missile crisis and Kennedy assassination. As a native Texas I remember very well Lyndon Johnson's presidency and his big personality, as well as Lady Bird's highly-successful beautification efforts. But these weren't the only reasons the book made me quite nostalgic. We now live in an age where everyone seems determined to undermine each other and treat opponents as sub-human. It was good to remember the times when opponents could duke it out during the day but then go out for dinner or drinks, or have a meal at each other's homes while the kids played together. I wish Mr. West was still alive so I could hope he would see this review and know that his stories have touched my heart.

JB West, the head usher, gives an insider's look at the First Ladies and the way they made the house their own. Fascinating on many levels, it's a unique microcosm of our changing society. The shift in social status and the way things are done, as the Roosevelt's upper crust lifestyle exits, compared to the bread and butter of Harry Truman's middle America. Mami Eisenhower's velvet gloves fifties style housewife, contrasts Jackie Kennedy's upper crust finishing school that brought a new elegance to the White House. Everything is lovingly detailed from the strange requests, the guest and parties, births and deaths, making each First Family unique. This book concentrates on women thrust into a peculiar position, torn from their regular lives, to create the illusion of normalcy for their families, all while being a role model for a country that has not quite figured out exactly what they are supposed to do.

Unlike "The Butler," West worked more directly with the First Ladies and details of the mansion and management of the employees that served the mansion rather than working solely for the president. Thus, if you are interested in knowing the habits and personalities of the First Ladies or the details of interior decorating, this is your book.Of course, we also see West's side of the deaths of FDR and JFK, the illnesses of DDE, and the relationships between incoming and outgoing presidents. But in this book there is more about the upkeep of the structure of the mansion, which was gutted and completely rebuilt on the inside during Truman's office as it was discovered when Truman's bathtub began to fall through the floor. There is also a lot of information about the First Ladies management skills, decorating preferences, relationships with their spouses and the behaviors of the children. We find out which presidents slept in the same bed with their wives and which did not.West discusses the difficulties of meeting the needs of family guests versus the needs of diplomatic guests. He provides amusing anecdotes about Winston Churchill, who must have been quite a character, and Queen Elizabeth, who sounds more down to earth in West's view than I would have imagined. He also tells of the elaborate plans that must happen behind the scenes so that White House events came off without a snag.While West declares an allegiance to the mansion first and foremost, he doesn't throw dirt about the First Families. Granted this book was published in the '70s and there was still a certain respect of the First Family at that time by the press and the opposing political party, as opposed to the dirt that is slung in all directions at this time. He takes an objective view of the personalities of the Presidents and First Ladies, describing them with respect even when he struggled to meet their demanding requirements.Not the best written book, and I eagerly looked forward to reading about the next administration being somewhat bored with household details such as furnishings, china and carpets of the previous. However, if you are interested in the history of the mansion itself, this would be a worthwhile read.

A story that is told so simply that it has the ring of truth about it. You almost expect an Upstairs Downstairs type of story but it is nothing like it. This book gave a great measure of humanity to the Presidents it covers and their First Ladies showing just how influential the Ladies were. Highly reccommended

About the Author

Nivaldo Tro is Professor of Chemistry at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California, where he has been a faculty member since 1990.   He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University, for work on developing and using optical techniques to study the adsorption and desorption of molecules to and from surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum.   He then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where he did post-doctoral research on ultra-fast reaction dynamics in solution.  Since coming to Westmont, Professor Tro has been awarded grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, from Research Corporation, and from the National Science Foundation to study the dynamics of various processes occurring in thin adlayer films adsorbed on dielectric surfaces.   He has twice been honored as Westmont's outstanding teacher of the year and has also received the college's outstanding researcher of the year award.   Professor Tro lives in Santa Barbara with his wife, Ann, and their four children, Michael, Ali, Kyle, and Kaden.  In his leisure time, Professor Tro enjoys reading good literature to his children and being outdoors with his family.

I have just bought this brand new 3rd edition and compared it with my 1st edition. They are almost exactly the same, even down to the page numbers. This is an old scam by textbook publishers, but usually they will at least change around the table of contents and put in new diagrams, photos and tables. Not so with this title.And if the 1st and 3rd editions are almost exact copies, then I'm sure the 2nd edition would be fine too.Also, do not think that you need to buy the "Custom Edition" for your school, it's just the campus bookstore's and publisher's way of keeping you off Amazon and charging you double for an already overpriced book.

Chemistry: A Molecular ApproachEven though it says twice in the description that the ebook comes with Mastering Chemistry, and it is the first result with an ISBN search that includes Mastering Chemistry, it actually doesn't contain Mastering Chemistry. False adverting at its finest. Chatted with support and all they would do is refund my money so I can order a hardcover. I can't go without a text while in a class. Very bad customer service.

Chemistry is my least favorite subject and the one I struggle with the most but this textbook provides lots of helpful examples that have step by step explanations. This is one of the few textbooks I've actually read and worked through completely and it doesn't disappoint. I went from getting solid C's in chemistry to an A-/B+ level, which I think is pretty good. I do wish the chapters were a bit shorter though but I guess it would be hard to condense all the material.

Great book, included even more than I needed for my class. It was frustrating that it did not include much of the appendix information that most of the other books include such as acid/base values, oxidizing/reducing agent values, etc. the tables in the chapters are only partial and refer one to a nonexistent appendix to see the "rest of the values" that this book doesn't include. It's too bad because this was actually a wonderful book otherwise. It includes extra information and problems that the other version of the general chemistry book does not and it helped carry me to an A in my chemistry 2 course.

Content of the chapters matched up with the non-global edition. BUT, the exercises/word problems and answers were almost always different than the non-global edition. So, if you’re purchasing for class, I would spend the extra money for the non-global edition. I got lucky and had a professor that let me take pictures of her exercises and answers in the non-global edition since I’d already bought the global edition. Just an FYI!

This is a good chemistry book for anyone in an AP chemistry or college chemistry setting for those taking their first Chemistry course in a post secondary school setting. I have seen a better book for this topic but this book does serve its purpose and I would recommend using it consistently especially if this is assigned in your course. The explanations are fairly straight forward and examples are numerous throughout the book. If you follow this book there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't get an A in the course you are taking unless your teacher decides to digress to more advanced topics such as Organic Chemistry.

Been using this book for several terms now for my general chemistry sequence and it was a little cheaper than buying it at the campus bookstore. Very satisfied with the purchase. Tro does a great job walking through the problem solving and using real world examples, but I've found that problems can ask you to find a given variable in an equation and the book may never give an example like that. So the book is good but you won't see every kind of problem i.e. it might be up to you to rearrange the equation. This is not a fault of the book just expect to have to do some critical thinking as they don't spoon feed you everything.

Complex concepts, such as rate laws and the more difficult concepts of acids and bases among others, were broken down well and explained with helpful detail. It is the type of book that you can sit and read for a longer period of time because, although it seems like it is based on size, it isn't a verbose book and relates chemistry topics to the real world. The text is so small on the hardcopy that it is almost impossible to read. Had I have known this, I would have never purchased this book.I am only at the beginning of the first chapter and have eye fatigue. Really sad.

Spend the extra few dollars to get another print of this book. The book is excellent, but this publication is the worst I've ever seen. The pages aren't numbered, the words are randomly bolded, and the indentions do not make any sense. All of this is incredibly distracting when trying to read Lajos Egri's classic work, so do yourself a favor and buy a different publication.

I've read quite a few books on writing fiction and this was one of my favorites (my number one favorite being Story: Substance, Structure, Style and The Principles of Screenwriting). Egri does an amazing job breaking down how to make characters drive your story, and his principles are self-evident in that you'll immediately recognize them at work in all great stories that you've read and watched.Some of the key concepts he covers in this book are...- How to create your story's PREMISE. SO many stories lack this and, as a result, feel empty and hollow (and you often don't know why).- How to craft your pivotal character--the character that will force the conflict and that makes or breaks the story. If you get this wrong, you'll lose people very quickly.- How to play your protagonist against your antagonist correctly so that the tension of the story builds steadily until the climax. This is what makes books real page-turners.- How to figure out where to open your story so it immediately grabs your reader or viewer and doesn't let him go.- What is meant by "character growth" and how to do this in a way that feels natural and inevitable. Nothing is worse than reading about or watching a story wherein the people never change or, even worse, change inexplicably and illogically.- How to create "tridimensional" characters that feel true to life at a visceral level. These are the types of characters that you never forget.- And much more.If you're a fiction writer of any kind (novels, TV, screenplays, etc.), read this book. It will forever change the way you look at storytelling.

I took an Introduction to Screenwriting class through a continuing education program and this was the required read. Although this is written for a play, it works perfectly for film and TV.

This is my favorite book on storytelling. It was mandatory reading for a graduate class I took at USC and it helped me write my first novel. It's about playwriting but is instrumental in any form of story telling.

This is not a typical book about writing screenplays or plays which you can find almost anywhere. This book delves deeper into psychology and how you can humanize your characters and create a storyline which is way, way up in terms of excellence. Brilliant!

This book is a classic.One of the things that makes this book a classic is its simplicity. The book start exploring how you as a dramatic writer can use Premise as the guiding sign through out the whole process of writing a story.Once you have a premise you can work on creating your characters (using the premise to do that). To do this you'll have to know your character's physiology, sociology, pshychology, etc.Once you have your characters you can work on creating the story using the principle of contradiction, thesis, antithesis and synthesis. You'll have to use clashing forces... (again, you use the premise as explained at the beginning of the book).Then the author covers some of the most important elements in writing dramatic material of quality.In my case I found the chapter of "Jumping" quite enlightening. Once you read this chapter you'll understand why many, many stories just don't work. The characters jump and then... they fall to their death... and to the apaty of the audience.What is it that I like about this book? Well, I read it... time passes... come back to it again... time passes... and I come back again to read it!Where as most books make you feel like writing is extremely difficult, this one always makes me feel like I'm in command and that great story telling is within my grasp.

Amazon carries so many authors, but Lajos Egri is the best (in my opinion) in the field of creative writing. Thank You Amazon.In the first chapter, titled Premise, Mr Egri tells us "A man sits in his workshop, busy with an invention of wheels and springs. You ask him what the gadget is, what it is meant to do. He looks at you confidingly and whispers: 'I really don't know.'"This is apt for not only the play write or author with the first draft, it can pertain to the reader of Steinbeck or Faulkner or Joyce, BUT if person has read or at least browsed The Art of Dramatic Writing, then he/she will have a path to follow whether towards a finished play or novel or the thrill and enjoyment of understanding great writing.This book is a must in anyone's library.

I've enjoyed this series since the first novel patient zero. The amount of detail the author goes into describing even background characters really helps immerse you in the dms/Joe Leger world. In addition the amount of details provided in regards to the technology and equipment used by both sides in each book belies a deep understanding and knowledge only possible through painstaking research. Unfortunately, in the past two books or so, more so in this latest addition there was a deep political bias ingrained in the story which I found annoying and jarring. Leisure reading is meant to be an escape not preaching political stances that will inevitably alienate at least half of your readers/fans. Prior to this and the penultimate entry into the Joe ledger series, the story has its own politics and intrigue that unfolded as part of the narrative. When you create politics around the Characters you enrich the lore of said character's world, however when you bend them to fit outside politics, you detract from the same. I'm ok with disagreeing or diametrically opposed political opinion, but I do regret paying to have someone else's shoved in my face rather than get what I meant to be paid for, a good entertaining story.Ps. Military branches are traditionally supposed to be capitalized as the author forgot to do in the end.

First off, I am a huge fan of the Joe Ledger series. I discovered this series a few years ago and since then have been reading the new ones as soon as they come out. That's saying a lot because I love this series despite HATING the "snapshot" format of his chapters / pacing. This was a great story like all the others.So why did I only give it three stars? Well, the political bias is so blunt that Mr. Maberry could have named this novel "Donald Trump Sucks, a Joe Ledger Novel." Don't get me wrong, I'm not some die-hard conservative who is in love with Trumpism, I'm actually a Libertarian and vote that way. I just don't like being preached at. I understand that many people have very strong feelings about the political spectrum in the US at the moment, and I also recognize that Mr. Maberry has every right to do as he pleases. That being said, this novel took it a bit far and was Mr. Maberry clearly wanted to sway his readers to his particular viewpoint of the current administration.A substantial number of Mr. Maberry's readers are likely ex-military or action junkies, simply because this series would appeal to those people. A LOT of those people are likely Republicans. I think quite a few of them will be turned off by this novel, and given how strongly people feel on both sides of the aisle these days, this novel may cost Mr. Maberry quite a few readers. That's a shame because I love his books and want him to keep writing. As long as he's making money, he's writing.So, bottom line. Great story, but too preachy with regards to the current administration. Like I said, his viewpoint doesn't offend me, I just don't like sitting down to read a novel and instead finding myself on CNN.

Let me start off by saying, I love the series. I love Mr. Maberry’s books. But I’m tired of authors spoiling my leisure time by imposing their political views on me. Do I need your editorials? No. I’m not going to pay for them either. You don’t respect your readers enough to not offend them. I’m done paying for your books.

Pretty cool premise - some shout outs to Lovecraftian horror, which is always a bonus in my book! Some big changes/spoilers happened, so hopefully this will add some much needed "new blood/spice" to the next book in the franchise!I have been a huge fan of the Joe Ledger series and have read every story since it first came out. However, I've noticed with the most recent ones, we seem to be at an impasse with regards to prior characters/villains popping up.The tie-ins to previous novels was a bit of a cop out in my opinion, and the "evil traitors in government who hate DMS" theme has worn a bit thin. Thought the obvious stand-ins for the current president and probably one of his prominent female advisors was kind of cringe inducing. I get it, you have to be relevant to the times, but enough is enough please.A lot of dead-end storylines and plot points that probably would have been cool but were either tied up too quickly or never resolved.Overall not the worst Joe Ledger book, but definitely not the best.

I just finished Jonathan Maberry’s new Joe Ledger book, Deep Silence. He’s been one of my favorite writers for a long time. This book was written with his typical skill - excellent action, cool tech, vivid characters, etc... But - he had to go full-on Trump Derangement Syndrome with an obvious POTUS character that is one of the secondary villains and is the most detestable character in the book. Very passive-aggressive jabbing at conservatives and even America. A story that favors the UN of the USA. Quite disappointing. He has previously kept his stuff non-preachy and his sociopolitical views were expressed with subtlety. That is not the case this time. He is a great writer, and I can look past some of this like I do with movies and shows, but he pushed to my limit with this one.

The stories that describe the author's interaction with the restaurant owners and some of the history behind each of the restaurants are well written and give some insight into what makes each place special. The accompanying recipes are for dishes that look absolutely delicious. Some of the recipes, I will be able to make. Some of them require special ingredients that you will have to get from the restaurants themselves. The book is gorgeous and a joy to look through.

Great cookbook cannot wait to try some of yummy recipes. Makes me wish I had visited some of the sites listed in the book while I was in Nashville!

Love it and Nashville

The author intertwines stories about each unique restaurant with recipes that make you want to go there...NOW. I will use Ms. Stewart-Howard's book on each of my next trips to Nashville and know that I'm getting "the real deal."

I picked this up at the library and now it's in my Amazon cart. After living in the Nashville area for almost two years, I am amazed at how many restaurants I still need to try. Some are pretty basic, nothing fancy kind of places while others are much more upscale.The recipes look good and I will definitely be making several dishes. Hopefully the recipes will work out, but even if they don't this book is still worth the price of admission. The author's stories are personal, friendly and inviting. They are motivating me to get out and check these restaurants out NOW. My husband is trying to convince me to make reservations as I type this. I have a feeling I'll be sending this to a lot of friends and relatives who don't live across the country. Maybe after reading this, they will be more inclined to visit.

Great book with fabulous recipes that are easy to make. Well written with great history to go with the restaurants.
