This book is SO important, it belongs on the bookshelf in every family home and should be required reading for every student studying child development.Lois Letchford has written a truly readable book! She draws one into the heart of her family, and from the first chapter one is committed with Lois and her husband Chris to finding a solution to the severe learning disability preventing their middle son, Nicholas, from learning to read.It is a story of a mother’s love. Lois was determined to understand and find a solution. She knew her son was highly intelligent and she left no stone unturned in her search for a solution. She should be given an honorary doctorate for her research, and the resulting success, of reversing what she calls “Development Language Delayâ€.Nicholas was discounted as severely disabled by all the professionals during his early school years. Last year he earned his Ph.D in Mathematics from Oxford.I highly recommend this beautifully written book!
This memoir, at times, moved me to tears and at other times made my heart sing with joy. I cheered on and admired the determination and perseverance of a mother desperately searching for the keys that would open up and further engage her son to explore and learn about the world around him. When others gave up, this mother (the author) courageously carried on and believed in her son’s ability to learn. Determination, perseverance, and a mother’s undying love and support, led to the treasure of a brilliant mind.
While reading "Reversed" I had an uniquely 21st Century experience, I was able to tweet to the author Lois Letchford directly in real time! She Wrote Back, so we wrote back and forth in between my reading chunks of her experience teaching/reaching her son. So, I kinda had my very own Twitter reading party with her. Too Cool! Her Bright and beautiful 2-E son has Dyslexia. He also has a Ph.D. in Mathematics. Their journey from Traumatic Kindergarten to victory over naysayers is central to the story. She had wisdom from her mom: "Make learning fun".If you've ever dealt with teaching a child from a text that Just. Doesn't. Work., you'll enjoy they triumphed through this. One of my favorite bits.I was somewhat intimidated, not by the author, no she's gracious, warm and funny. No my intimidation came from when I looked at what I haven't yet done for and with my youngest son. My son's diagnosis is a bit more complex than hers but their story of triumph is hope in paperback form. How she develops her own curriculum for her son is brilliant. Check the section in "Reversed" on The Box Lesson. Just Fabulous. She found how to reach him and delight him. No spoilers, but Apple juice will make you smirk from here on.In any good story there is a villain, this one has Two. Going in knowing he's going to be ok made it safe, & piqued my curiosity.Other reviewers here have derided her emotions. I am so grateful for her emotions in her writing. This is so hard what she did, and what we as mothers with children who learn differently face. How we as mothers dig deep in our own creative abilities to make a lesson the child will learn from is inspiring and exhausting, she captures that. That she had people to consult with, who helped her is miraculous. Her gratitude shows.A testament of a mother's love and a son's willingness to put in boatloads of work on his own too. If you know someone with Dyslexia, get them or their parents this book. This month is especially useful because October is #DyslexiaAwarenessMonth #SayDyslexia
Do not pass this book by. What I first thought would only be Nicholas' story turned into a true memoir. It was a privilege to read about how both Nicholas and his mother were transformed. This book read more like a novel whose pages I could not stop turning. I hope we hear more from Lois Letchford
Loving this book! Very well written. I enjoy reading it every night to my 11-year old daughter! My daughter has dyslexia and she took the book to school today and read six chapters throughout her day. She has NEVER had the desire to read by herself so I think that speaks volumes about this wonderful story!
Reading some of the reviews it was said that this book was boring. I did not find this book to be dull at all and had trouble putting it down. It is hard breaking how people sometimes treat children. The struggles this child and this mom had to go through were things I could identify with. I think this will be an enjoyable read for anyone who works with struggling readers, was a struggling reader, or who has a child who is struggling to read.
I absolutely loved this book and found it very inspiring. As a School Psychologist, and someone who regularly assesses children's academic potential, this book drives home the point that it is imperative not to write children off at an early age, and to be extremely careful about one's interpretation and explanation to parents. Lois' success in teaching her child where others were incapable, and the methods she used provide great food for thought.
All teachers and parents shoud read this book to gain an understanding of how likely it is that a struggling child will achieve great success if only he or she finds the right educator. This book is a lesson in perseverance, determination and love.
